- How it works
- Remdesivir is a nucleotide prodrug metabolized intracellularly to its active triphosphate form, an analog of adenosine triphosphate. This active metabolite is incorporated by the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase into nascent viral RNA in competition with the natural ATP substrate. Incorporation causes delayed chain termination of the growing RNA strand, disrupting viral genome replication. This selective inhibition of the viral polymerase underlies remdesivir's antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated for the treatment of COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients who are hospitalized, or who are not hospitalized with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and are at high risk of progression to severe disease. Administered intravenously.
