- A lab-made antibody that grabs onto VEGF, a signal tumors send out to grow new blood vessels, cutting off the blood supply they need to keep growing and spreading.
- How it works
- Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody that binds circulating vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) with high affinity, preventing it from engaging its receptors on vascular endothelial cells. By neutralizing VEGF, it inhibits angiogenesis, the formation of new tumor-associated blood vessels, thereby limiting tumor blood supply, growth, and metastatic spread. It is administered as an intravenous infusion, typically combined with chemotherapy or other targeted agents depending on tumor type.
- Therapeutic applications
- FDA-approved across multiple solid-tumor indications, generally in combination regimens, including metastatic colorectal cancer, non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, recurrent glioblastoma, metastatic renal cell carcinoma, persistent or metastatic cervical cancer, epithelial ovarian cancer, and unresectable or metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma.
