- A lab-made antibody that blocks PCSK9, a protein that normally limits how much “bad” cholesterol the liver clears — blocking it lowers cholesterol further.
- How it works
- Evolocumab is a fully human IgG2 monoclonal antibody that binds circulating PCSK9 and prevents it from binding hepatic LDL receptors. By inhibiting PCSK9-mediated LDL receptor degradation, evolocumab increases the number of LDL receptors available on the hepatocyte surface, driving greater hepatic clearance of circulating LDL particles and producing substantial reductions in LDL-C. It complements statins and other lipid-lowering agents that act via different mechanisms.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and coronary revascularization in adults with established cardiovascular disease; as an adjunct to diet and other LDL-lowering therapies for primary hyperlipidemia; and for heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in patients 10 years and older.
