Comirnaty
- Mechanism of action
- Lipid nanoparticle-delivered mRNA encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein
- In plain language
- Delivers lab-made instructions (mRNA) that teach the body to build a piece of the COVID-19 virus, training the immune system to recognize the real thing.
- How it works
- Comirnaty contains nucleoside-modified mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles that encodes the full-length, prefusion-stabilized spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. Following intramuscular injection, the lipid nanoparticle facilitates cellular uptake of the mRNA, which host ribosomes translate into spike protein. The expressed antigen elicits both neutralizing-antibody and cellular immune responses; the mRNA itself does not enter the nucleus and is degraded by normal cellular processes after antigen expression.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 in individuals 65 and older, and in individuals 5 through 64 with at least one underlying condition placing them at increased risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes.
- Class
- mRNA vaccine
- Therapeutic area
- Vaccine (COVID-19)
