Spikevax
Mechanism of action
Lipid nanoparticle-delivered encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein
In plain language
Delivers lab-made instructions (mRNA) wrapped in a tiny fat bubble that teach your cells to briefly build a harmless piece of the COVID-19 virus's spike, training your immune system to recognize the real thing.

How it works
Spikevax consists of nucleoside-modified mRNA encoding the prefusion-stabilized spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2, encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles that facilitate cellular uptake and protect the mRNA from degradation. Following intramuscular injection, host cells at the injection site and draining lymph nodes translate the mRNA into spike protein, which is displayed on the cell surface or secreted. This exposure induces both neutralizing- and T-cell immune responses directed against the spike protein.
Therapeutic applications
Indicated for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 in individuals 65 years of age and older, and in those 6 months through 64 years of age who have at least one underlying condition placing them at high risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes.
Class
mRNA vaccine
Therapeutic area
Vaccine (COVID-19)
