How it works
Rizatriptan is a triptan that acts as a selective agonist at 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors. Activation of 5-HT1B receptors on intracranial blood vessels produces vasoconstriction, while activation of 5-HT1D receptors on trigeminal sensory nerve terminals the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides and dampens trigeminovascular pain transmission. Together these actions interrupt the vascular dilation and neurogenic inflammation thought to underlie migraine attacks.
Therapeutic applications
Indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and pediatric patients aged 6-17 years. Not indicated for migraine prophylaxis, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, or cluster headache.
