- How it works
- Rizatriptan is a triptan that acts as a selective agonist at 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D serotonin receptors. Activation of 5-HT1B receptors on intracranial blood vessels produces vasoconstriction, while activation of 5-HT1D receptors on trigeminal sensory nerve terminals inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides and dampens trigeminovascular pain transmission. Together these actions interrupt the vascular dilation and neurogenic inflammation thought to underlie migraine attacks.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and pediatric patients aged 6-17 years. Not indicated for migraine prophylaxis, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, or cluster headache.
