- How it works
- Latanoprost is an isopropyl ester prodrug that, following topical ocular administration, is hydrolyzed by corneal esterases to its biologically active acid form. This active metabolite acts as a selective agonist at the prostanoid FP receptor, and its principal pharmacodynamic effect is to increase uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor, with a secondary contribution from increased trabecular outflow. The result is a reduction in intraocular pressure that begins within approximately 3-4 hours, peaks at 8-12 hours, and is sustained for at least 24 hours, permitting once-daily dosing. Because it does not primarily act by decreasing aqueous humor production, it works via a distinct, complementary drainage-based pathway.
