- A lab-made antibody that latches onto and blocks TNF-alpha, a protein the immune system overproduces during inflammation, calming down autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
- How it works
- Infliximab is a chimeric IgG1 monoclonal antibody that binds with high affinity to both soluble and transmembrane forms of human TNF-alpha, preventing the cytokine from engaging its receptors. This neutralization interrupts downstream pro-inflammatory signaling that drives tissue damage. Infliximab is administered as an intravenous infusion, typically in an induction-then-maintenance schedule, often alongside methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis to reduce immunogenicity.
- Therapeutic applications
- FDA-approved for moderately to severely active Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in adults and children 6 and older; moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in combination with methotrexate; active ankylosing spondylitis; active psoriatic arthritis; and chronic severe plaque psoriasis.
