- How it works
- Fluticasone propionate is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid that binds the intracellular glucocorticoid receptor with high affinity. Receptor activation modulates gene transcription, suppressing the recruitment and activity of inflammatory cells — mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes — and reducing release of mediators including histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines. Delivered intranasally, this reduces nasal mucosal inflammatory cell infiltration, lowering mucosal swelling, secretion, and hyperresponsiveness. Systemic absorption via the nasal route is minimal, limiting systemic corticosteroid exposure at recommended doses.
- Therapeutic applications
- Intranasal fluticasone propionate is indicated for management of the nasal symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and perennial nonallergic rhinitis in adults and pediatric patients aged 4 years and older, including nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal and ocular pruritus.
