- A lab-made antibody that keeps certain immune cells from entering the gut lining, calming inflammatory bowel disease.
- How it works
- Vedolizumab is a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody that selectively binds the alpha-4-beta-7 integrin expressed on a subset of memory T-lymphocytes that preferentially traffic to the gastrointestinal tract. By binding this integrin, it blocks its interaction with mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1, expressed predominantly on gut endothelium, preventing adhesion and transendothelial migration of these lymphocytes into inflamed intestinal tissue. Because its target is gut-selective, vedolizumab produces gut-restricted immunomodulation rather than systemic immunosuppression.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated in adults for moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis and moderately to severely active Crohn's disease. Pediatric safety and effectiveness have not been established.
