HPV vaccine
Gardasil 9
- Mechanism of action
- Recombinant HPV L1 capsid protein virus-like particles
- In plain language
- Trains the immune system to recognize HPV using lab-made particles that look like the virus but contain no viral DNA.
- How it works
- Gardasil 9 consists of recombinant L1 major capsid virus-like particles for nine HPV types, each produced separately in yeast and adsorbed onto an aluminum adjuvant. Because the particles are non-infectious and contain no viral genetic material, they cannot cause HPV infection or disease. Intramuscular administration induces type-specific antibody responses; protection is prophylactic only and does not treat existing HPV infection or disease.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated for individuals ages 9-45 for prevention of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers caused by covered HPV types, genital warts, and precancerous lesions. A prophylactic vaccine, not a treatment for existing HPV infection or disease.
- Class
- Protein subunit vaccine
- Therapeutic area
- Vaccine (HPV)
