Trains the immune system to recognize hepatitis B using a lab-made piece of the virus's outer shell, with no live virus involved.
How it works
Scientists insert the gene for a single hepatitis B surface protein into yeast cells, which then produce that protein in large quantities. This protein, not the virus itself, is purified and combined with an ingredient that helps the immune system respond more strongly. When injected, the body learns to recognize this protein and builds antibodies against it.
What it’s used for
Used to prevent hepatitis B infection before it happens, not to treat someone who already has it. Given as three shots over six months and part of routine childhood immunization schedules, as well as recommended for adults at higher risk of exposure.
