- A lab-made antibody that attaches to a docking site on activated immune cells, blocking the signal that would otherwise tell those cells to attack a transplanted organ.
- How it works
- Basiliximab is a chimeric (murine/human) IgG1 monoclonal antibody directed against the alpha subunit (CD25) of the high-affinity interleukin-2 receptor expressed on activated T-lymphocytes. By binding CD25 with high affinity, it competitively blocks IL-2 from engaging its receptor, interrupting a key signaling pathway required for clonal T-cell proliferation and activation in the alloimmune response. It is administered as part of a combination immunosuppressive regimen, not as monotherapy.
- Therapeutic applications
- Indicated for prophylaxis of acute organ rejection in adult and pediatric patients undergoing renal transplantation, used as part of an immunosuppressive regimen that includes cyclosporine and corticosteroids. Not established as effective for other solid-organ transplants.
